Plant Hire company needs cash flow
Cash flow problems in plant hire? See how one UK company found a finance solution to boost working capital. Case study via Nexgen Business Finance
Read the full story →Contractors and trades often pay for labour, materials and plant weeks before they are paid themselves. We help construction businesses fund kit, vehicles and working capital so cash flow can keep pace with the work you win.
Nexgen Business Finance Limited is a credit broker, not a lender, and an Appointed Representative of AFS Compliance Limited, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 625035).
Construction finance covers the funding contractors and trades use to buy plant and vehicles, smooth out long payment cycles and take on bigger contracts without running the bank account dry. We are a broker, not a lender, so we compare lenders that understand applications for payment, CIS and retentions rather than treating them as red flags.
The core problem in construction is timing. Wages are weekly, materials merchants want paying on account terms, and plant has to be on site from day one, yet you might invoice monthly through an application for payment and wait 30 to 60 days or more for the money. Retentions can hold back a slice of every valuation until practical completion or the end of the defects period. Growth makes this worse, because a bigger contract means a bigger funding gap.
There are also sector-specific tax rules that affect cash. Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct 20% from registered subcontractors' payments, or 30% if they are unregistered, unless the subcontractor has gross payment status, according to GOV.UK. Most supplies of building and construction services between VAT-registered businesses reported under CIS also fall under the VAT domestic reverse charge, so subcontractors do not collect output VAT from those customers. Both can change your cash position, so speak to your accountant about how they apply to you.
We approach funders that value excavators, dumpers, telehandlers and access kit properly, new or used.
Some lenders will fund applications for payment and stage invoices, not just simple one-off invoices.
Plant and vehicles you own outright may be refinanced to fund a new contract or clear expensive debt.
We fund vans and pick-ups, and our sister company, Nexgen Commercials, can source new vehicles with racking, ply lining and signwriting.
VAT and corporation tax bills can be spread where cash is tied up in work in progress.
We tell you plainly what lenders are likely to need and where your application may struggle.
| Need | Finance route | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| New or used plant | Hire purchase or asset finance | Spreads the cost over the working life of the machine, with ownership typically at the end on HP. |
| Waiting on valuations | Invoice or construction finance | Releases a percentage of approved invoices or applications so wages and suppliers get paid. |
| Cash tied up in owned kit | Asset refinance | Raises funds against plant or vehicles you already own. |
| Mobilising a big contract | Unsecured or secured business loan | A lump sum for labour, materials and set-up costs before the first payment lands. |
| Quarterly VAT or tax bill | VAT and tax loans | Spreads a large HMRC bill over a few months. |
| Yard, depot or office | Commercial mortgage | Longer-term finance to own your base, subject to valuation. |
Late payment and retentions have been a long-running issue for smaller contractors. The government's Commercial Payments Bill includes measures to prohibit the deduction and withholding of retention payments under construction contracts, with timing for implementation still to be consulted on, according to GOV.UK. At the time of writing the Bill has not yet become law, so for now retentions remain a normal part of many contracts and lenders will still take them into account.
Until any change takes effect, the practical answer is to plan for retentions in your cash flow forecast and choose funding that does not rely on getting them back on time.
Plant hire businesses have a slightly different profile: a large, valuable fleet, utilisation that rises and falls with the building cycle, and customers on credit terms. That often makes asset refinance or hire purchase a strong fit, because the fleet itself can support the borrowing.

Often, yes, although construction invoices are more complex than standard trade invoices because of applications for payment, retentions and set-off clauses. Some lenders specialise in this. We will look at your contracts and ledger and approach those most likely to be a good fit.
Many lenders will fund used plant, typically depending on its age, make, hours and condition and whether it is bought from a dealer or privately. Older machines may be funded over shorter terms.
No. Nexgen Business Finance is a credit broker, not a lender. We compare finance from a panel of lenders and help you apply. Any agreement is with the lender, and approval depends on their checks.
Possibly. Options might include invoice finance once you start billing, a loan to cover mobilisation, or refinancing kit you own. Lenders will want to see the contract, your track record on similar jobs and a cash flow forecast.
Lenders are used to CIS. They will want to understand whether deductions are taken from your income and how that shows in your accounts and bank statements. Being up to date with HMRC helps.
It is common in construction lending, especially for limited companies. A guarantee could make you personally liable if the business cannot pay. We will explain what each lender asks for before you commit.
