Nexgen Business Finance Limited is a credit broker, not a lender, and an Appointed Representative of AFS Compliance Limited, authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 625035).
How does van finance work for a business?
Van finance lets your business spread the cost of a new or used van over fixed monthly payments, usually between two and five years. Depending on the agreement, you either own the van at the end (hire purchase) or hand it back or upgrade (lease or contract hire).
For most tradespeople and small businesses, the van is the business. Buying outright can drain the cash you need for tools, materials and wages, so finance is often the sensible way to get a reliable vehicle on the road. The van itself normally secures the agreement, which can make it more accessible than an unsecured loan.
We are a broker, so we're not limited to one finance house. We compare lenders on rate, deposit, term and flexibility, including lenders who are comfortable with sole traders, newer businesses and used vans. If you're running a fleet, we can look at funding several vans together and plan renewals over time.
Our sister company Nexgen Commercials sources new vans and can add ply lining, racking and signwriting with UK-wide delivery, so the vehicle and the finance can be arranged in one conversation. For heavier vehicles, see HGV and truck finance, or read our commercial vehicle finance overview.

Electric van grants and tax
GOV.UK lists a government discount on eligible zero-emission vans, applied by the dealer at the point of sale: up to £2,500 for small vans under 2,500kg gross vehicle weight and up to £5,000 for large vans between 2,500kg and 4,250kg. Eligible vans must produce zero tailpipe emissions and travel at least 60 miles without emissions. Grant levels can change, so check with the dealer when you order.
Vans do not count as cars for capital allowances, so GOV.UK confirms they can qualify for the £1 million Annual Investment Allowance and some first-year allowances when bought, including on hire purchase. Companies may be able to claim full expensing on new and unused vans. On lease or contract hire you don't own the van, so the rentals are generally treated as a running cost instead. Please speak to your accountant about your own position.
Running a fleet
If you run several vans, it can pay to look at finance across the whole fleet rather than one vehicle at a time. Staggering agreements can smooth replacement cycles, and some lenders offer facilities for repeat purchases. Vans with a gross weight over 3,500kg, or businesses carrying goods for hire or reward in Europe in vans over 2.5 tonnes, may need a goods vehicle operator's licence under GOV.UK rules, so check this before you add bigger vehicles.
What lenders typically look at
- Van details or a dealer quote, including any conversion work
- Proof of identity and address for owners or directors
- Business bank statements, typically the last three months
- Accounts or tax returns if trading more than a year or two
- Driving licence details for the main driver(s)
- Details of any existing finance agreements
Things to consider
- The van is security for the agreement. If repayments aren't kept up, it may be repossessed, and you could still owe any shortfall.
- A personal guarantee may be required, especially for newer limited companies.
- Contract hire and some leases carry mileage and return-condition terms; excess mileage and damage charges can add up.
- A balloon payment lowers the monthly cost but leaves a larger final sum to pay or refinance.
- Insurance, servicing and tyres sit on top of the finance cost unless included in a maintenance package.

Van finance questions
Can a sole trader get van finance?
Yes. Many lenders on our panel work with self-employed tradespeople. They'll look at your personal credit history, how long you've been trading and your income, and newer sole traders may be asked for a deposit.
Can I finance a used van?
Usually, yes. Lenders often set a maximum age or mileage at the end of the agreement, so the older the van, the shorter the term may be.
Can racking, ply lining and signwriting be included?
Often they can be added to the amount financed when they're supplied with the van. Our sister company Nexgen Commercials can arrange these upgrades on new vans.
Is it better to buy or lease a van?
It depends on how long you'll keep it, your mileage and your tax position. Hire purchase suits businesses that run vans for years, while contract hire suits those who want fixed costs and regular upgrades. We can talk you through both.
Is Nexgen a lender?
No. We are a credit broker, not a lender. We compare offers from lenders on our panel and help with your application, and approval is always at the lender's discretion.
Can I get finance on an electric van with the grant?
Yes. Where a van qualifies, the dealer deducts the grant from the price and the finance is arranged on the reduced amount. Grant levels are set by the government and can change.
